Cooler temperatures and occasional rainfall make autumn the perfect time to prepare the garden forspring. Take advantage of milder conditions to fertilise, control weeds, and improve the overall appearance of the garden. To be rewarded with a lush and healthy yard Australia’s garden expert, Victa®, has prepared the following tips.
MAKING GROUND IN AUTUMN
1. REMOVE FALLEN LEAVES
It is important to remove fallen leaves from the lawn as soon as possible.
If left unmoved, leaves will become wet from rain and morning dew, stick together, and form athick layer that will suffocate the grass and breed fungal diseases.
An alternative to raking leaves is to use a blower like the Victa 82VLeaf Blaster, which is particularly effective for large yards, saving precious time.
2. START COMPOSTING
Compost is a natural fertiliser that is great for the garden. With leaves dropping from trees in autumn, it’s an ideal time to start making compost.
For the best results, be sure to get a 50/50 balance between garden waste and kitchen scraps.
Use compost as mulch by spreading it around plants, trees, and shrubs.
3. AERATE THE LAWN
Autumn is an ideal time to aerate the lawn to allow oxygen, water and fertiliser to circulate within the soil, and easily reach the grass roots.
This will help the roots grow deeply and produce a stronger, more vigorous lawn.
Aerating can be done by hand with a garden fork or aerating tool, but, to make the job much easier, hire an aerating machine from a local hardware store or machinery hire centre.
4. CONTROL WEEDS
Now is the time to fight back against any weeds that have taken control of the lawn.
Weeds, like most plants, are in energy - absorbing mode during autumn.
They are absorbing all that comes their way, including weed killers.
Apply herbicide now and the weeds will not return in the spring.
To guarantee the lawn stays green and healthy, be sure to fertilise.
Despite grass leaves growing slower this time of year, the roots continue to grow quickly, so an autumn application of essential nutrients will allow the grass to grow deep roots.
Use a slow release lawn food to develop a strong root system and thicker grass
There are many reasons why pruning plants is important.
It helps to improve the health and appearance of trees, removes dead or dying branches, and it can encourage crop growth in fruit trees.
Overgrown trees and bushes may increase their shade areas leaving the lawn underneath without enough sunlight for optimal growth.
Don’t prune plants that have already produced their spring buds, otherwise the opportunity to see blossoming spring flowers will be missed.
7. ADJUST THE MOWING HEIGHT
A beautiful lawn is created in autumn before the onset of winter when the grass experiences less growth making it difficult to repair and bring back to good health.
It is a good time to make sure the lawn mower blades are sharp.
During cooler months, grass grows much slower so raise the cutting height a little to avoid damage to the lawn.
As a general rule, it’s best not to cut grass lower than 2.5 centimetres to avoid the risk of 'scalping', which browns the grass.
Scalping the lawn repeatedly will weaken it, allowing more weeds and diseases to take hold.
