Victa to roll out historic eight millionth lawnmower
Legend has it that it took 14 years for iconic brand Victa to roll out their one millionth lawnmower, and from there another seven years to produce the second millionth. As reliably as a Victa mower itself, production of this Australian backyard staple has been consistently strong throughout its proud history, with the seven millionth bursting off the line in 2004. And you guessed it - another seven years on and Victa's Moorebank facility is set to sharpen the blades on another major milestone. Number eight million.
The Victa story spans almost 60 years and began humbly in Mervyn Victor Richardson's suburban Sydney backyard in Concord. Fast forward six decades and millions of ultra-reliable mowers later, and Victa is widely renowned as Australia's favourite mower - proud to be recognised as a lifestyle 'brand of choice' while earning a strong reputation for innovation, superior performance and rock-solid reliability. Exported to over 30 countries worldwide, Victa continues to change the way people think about their lawns.
"We are extremely proud to have reached this important milestone of eight million lawnmowers and have the Australian public to thank first and foremost," said Peter Wallace, Power Products Sales Director.
"The wide expanse we are, Australians have always had a lot of grass to mow as Mervyn must have known when he produced the first Victa from his garage in 1952. From there we have grown with the country's lawn needs."
As the time for the historic eight millionth roll-out looms, Victa has set out to find the most appropriate home for this one of a kind, special edition Australian classic.
"In 2004 the seven millionth mower was donated to and displayed in Sydney's Powerhouse Museum, alongside the first Victa that was put together almost 60 years ago," said Peter.
"With the eight millionth we are very much looking to donate it to a charity, that can perhaps use it to auction for fundraising. We think this classic push mower will provide a unique piece of history to the right buyer and reap a handy sum."
Technology advancements have continued to play a pivotal role in Victa's successful journey, with the current product range encompassing easy-to-use two and four stroke powered petrol mowers, mains electric and battery mowers, petrol and battery line trimmers, petrol and electric outdoor blower-vacs and a range of accessories. Quite amazing when you consider the first prototype was created using simple scrap metal, billy cart wheels, a peach tin for a fuel tank and an old two-stroke engine.
"It's funny how it all comes around I think, how many times have you seen lawnmower wheels on kids billy carts? It's an Australian thing to do, and I'd love to know how many Victa mower engines and wheels have been stripped over the years and attached to carts. At eight million mowers, quite a number I imagine," laughed Peter.
